New Years Honours List!

That’s right – Psalm 145. A wonderful alphabet list of praise and glory to God*
Each line begins with the next letter of the Hebrew Alphabet.
See how many different words used for ‘praising’. There are so many ways we can praise him!

Coupled with Psalm 144, our Psalm concludes a time of deep trouble for king David in Psalms 140-143 [“Recue me from evil men…(140:1) keep me from the wicked(140:4); “come quickly...hear my voice” (141:1); I pour out my complaint(142:2); “..listen to my cry for mercy” (143:1).]
I am mainly using the ESV but once or twice dip into the translations of Alec Motyer.

My prayerful song as I reach another New Year…

1   I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.

It’s personal for each congregant: ‘MY King’!!
NB  “I will”  is a pledge (cf marriage vows)

2  Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.

“PRAISE MY SOUL THE KING OF HEAVEN!”

3  Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,
        and his greatness is unsearchable

[we cannot possibly begin to comprehend  the depths of God’s might!  EG See Job 38]

4  One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts

He is so good. Tell the younger ones
[the LORD has graciously saved me from sin and hell!]

5  On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

He is so good.
[‘I will set time aside this week and jot down lists of your incredible deeds  - perhaps using the Psalms and other Scripture so I can meditate
on the list –  turning the scriptures over and over in my  mind in order to infect my heart]

6  They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare (recount) your greatness.

He is so good.

7  They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

He is so good.
 “TELL OUT MY SOUL..…!”

8  The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

He is so good.
Patient with us ..waiting ..

9  The LORD is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.

He is so gracious to you.…and to all. Tell them so.

10  All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD,
and all your saints (your beloved people) shall bless you.

What the Lord is in himself (8) is spelled out to what he is to all (9), to his people (10-11)

11  They shall speak off the glory of your Kingdom
                   and tell of your power,

for we are his subjects (a blessing)…citizens of heaven.

12  to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendour of your Kingdom.

[Jesus is risen! His Kingdom is  near! No eye has seen. no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him!]

13   your Kingliness is a kingliness for all eternity!
and your dominion (realm) endures throughout all generations.

Daniel 7:14, 27 & 4:34 & Psalm 2
‘GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS ..’

14  The LORD upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.

Have you experienced this?   ….then declare it! (and keep doing so)
I’m so often faithless, inadequate, failing, ….and yet

15  The eyes of all look to you (are hoping for you),
and you give them their food in due season.

A habitual expectation /leaning trust  “give us today our daily bread”

16  You open your hand;
and with good will (favour) you satisfy
the desire of every living thing.

17  The LORD is righteous in all his ways
             (whether in grace or judgement)
and changelessly loving (kind) in all his works

For instance…? Can you draw up a list ?

18  The LORD is near (your next of kin!) to all who call on him,
who call on him in truth.

He answers our prayers
He is your kinsman-redeemer (Ruth)    = he accepts your burdens, debts, needs,  … as though they were his own.

19  He fulfils the desire of those who fear him;
He also hears their cry and saves them.

Your Kingdom come – your will be done ..forgive us our sins…  ‘BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD ABOVE…’

20   The LORD preserves all who love him,
But all the wicked he will destroy

He keeps and watches over you beloved one     (John 10:28). He will never let you go.
For he is perfectly good and just.

21   My mouth will speak the praises of the LORD,
and all flesh will bless the name of his holiness.

Repeat this line a few times.
Philippians 2:10-11

Amen

*Repeating the pattern found in Psalms 90-104 and Psalms 120-134, Psalm 144 & 145 are a couplet of praise songs following a set of Psalms on a particular theme. In this case – they follow three Psalms depicting trouble for king David.

Happy New Year!

With lots of love from Dan

NB   Look out for a blog coming soon to introduce our series in Revelation.
